The Arapaleeswarar Temple is one of the oldest and most revered shrines in Kolli Hills, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is traditionally believed to have been built by the chieftain Valvil Ori (around the 1st century CE), and carries Chola-era Tamil inscriptions in its old stone walls. Local legend tells of a concealed passage said to connect the temple to the Shiva temple at Rasipuram.

Why visit

  • Atmospheric Dravidian stone architecture and centuries-old carvings set against the hills.
  • A peaceful starting point for the trek to Agaya Gangai Waterfalls.
  • Granite boulder formations nearby are popular with rock climbers.
  • Active local worship — be respectful of ongoing rituals.

Festivals

The temple comes alive during the Aadi month festival (July–August) with lights and traditional celebrations, and the annual Valvil Ori festival in August honours the chieftain linked to its founding. Quieter days offer a more peaceful visit than the busy festival periods.

Visitor etiquette

  • Remove footwear before entering.
  • Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered).
  • Photography may be restricted inside the sanctum — ask first.
